Definition

Àríṣòǹkà jẹ́ irinṣ́ẹ́ kan fún ìṣirò ọlọ́wọ́ tó ní àwọn ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ tí a máa ń wọ́ lára àwọn ọ̀pá láti dúró fún àwọn òǹkà àti láti ṣe àwọn iṣẹ́ ìṣirò bíi ìròpọ̀ àti ìyọkúrò. (An abacus is a manual calculating device with beads slid on rods to represent numbers and perform arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction.)

Formation

A ṣẹ̀dá ọ̀rọ̀ àríṣòǹkà láti ara à+rí+ṣe+òǹkà (ohun tí a rí láti fi ṣe òǹkà).

Usage Examples

  • Ó kọ́ bí a ṣe ń ro àwọn nọ́ńbà ńlá pọ̀ kíákíá nípa lílo àríṣòǹkà. She learned to add large numbers quickly using an abacus.
  • Olùkọ́ náà fi àríṣòǹkà aláwọ̀ dídán sórí àga ìkọ̀wé akẹ́kọ̀ọ́ kọ̀ọ̀kan. The teacher placed a colorful abacus on each student's desk.
